The first version of Wyrmes Mete, completed in 1996, was created in Storyspace® on a Macintosh® IIsi running System 7. Additional work on this first version was done on a Mac PowerBook 520 (grayscale).

During work on this first piece, Storyspace went through maintenance upgrades from version 1.0 to 1.5. I subsequently used the new version of Storyspace, v2.0, to add the journal text, to generate maps for designing navigation, and generally to manage the project.

The present version of Wyrmes Mete was undertaken in late 2000, beginning with an export to HTML from Storyspace 1.5. Once the text was converted to HTML, I used various computers: a Macintosh G3 running MacOS 8.6; a Dell running Windows® 98 (at work); a Mac iBook running OS 9.04.

Processing HTML took place in a number of programs:

  • raw HTML was written in NotePad and WordPad for Windows, and in SimpleText and BBEdit Lite (v4.6) on the Mac
  • some early page layout and HTML editing was done in Netscape Composer, for both Mac and Windows
  • later page layout, site management, and templating was done in Dreamweaver 3.0 for Mac
  • advanced linking and navigation was implemented using the Word Circuits Connection System
  • throughout, I checked my work in both Netscape (v4.7) and Internet Explorer (v4 and v5) on both Mac and Windows platforms.

Photographs were scanned on a Umax Astra1220S. I processed most images in GraphicConverter, which went through upgrades from v3.2.1 to v4.0.4, and in a trial version of Adobe Photoshop Elements.

I used the drawing module in AppleWorks v6 to create the branch graphic (left-handed!), the titles, and some navigator compasses.

The ivory figurines are from Japan, brought home in 1946 by my father, when he returned from active duty in the Pacific. They were scanned directly, as was the partially eaten pine cone, which I found on the ground behind Kowalsky House at the Vermont Studio Center, during my residency in January 2002.
